Cucuy FC : Mulligan’s FC 0:6 (0:3)
The only mulligan that Cucuy is looking for after this game is the type that gives us a do-over. You have to show up ready to play a hard fought game when you’re facing Mulligan’s, and we definitely did not show up in proper fashion to play a worthy game. Sunday was a cold, muggy morning with weather that was just begging to start raining at any time, and it probably didn’t help our spirits.
It was a one sided bashing from the get go. The only thing we might have won all day was the coin toss. Mulligan’s scored within the first ten minutes on a head high cross that awkwardly made it through the Cucuy defense and was picked up by a Mulligan’s striker on the far side of the net. It wasn’t a very authoritative finish, but it was enough to get it to the back of the net. Only five minutes later Mulligan’s scored again with a textbook passing play through the middle, which only allowed the Cucuy defense to try to contain positionally, but Mulligan’s executed perfectly and the goal couldn’t be stopped. After that second goal, only being 15 minutes into the game and not generating anything positive in our favor, I think everyone knew we were in for a beating.
We found sparse opportunities throughout the game, mostly on long shots that were well taken but either missed the net by a couple feet, got blocked by traffic, or got smothered by the enormous Mulligan’s keeper. We failed all game to generate any significant offense that really penetrated the Mulligan defense. The goals for Mulligan’s just seemed to trickle in one after another and I think we were all glad to hear the final whistle so we could go home and nurse our asses.
We don’t often lose by such a large margin, so let’s forget it and move on. MVP goes to Paris for hustling and tracking with his man all game despite the score.

Shootout at the O.K. Corral
Cucuy FC : Athletico Toros 5:5 (1:2)
There was no shortage or scoring in this game, as the score shows. I’m not sure I’ve ever played a game in my life that resulted in a 5-5 tie. Toros didn’t appear to be too much of a threat at first glance with some older players playing in the back and a heavy set striker (Gordo) up top.
We pounded on Toros’ doorstep for the first 20 minutes of the game. We shredded their defense with nice through balls but regardless of the almost 10 legitimate chances we had on net, we didn’t convert. Finally about 25 min into the first half, a perfectly played head height ball from Steve sent Huczek in behind the Toros defense. With the sweeper breathing down his neck, Huczek took his shot early with the outside of his right foot and curled it around the charging Toros keeper from well outside the 18.
Toros responded almost immediately after we put up the first point. An unassuming foul around midfield turned into a goal for Toros after a quick start on the free kick to one of their strikers, who took his space and put a perfect shot from around 20-25 out leaving Kyle with no chance on the play. What seemed like only a few minutes later, a ball was played in from the right midfield into our 18. Gordo pushed off one of the Cucuy defensemen and deflected the ball into the net on a falling (not diving) header. Simply unfortunate that the scoring opportunities in the first half was about 10-2 in favor of Cucuy, but the score was 2-1 Toros.
More of the same story in the second half. Cucuy had a ton of chances on net and Toros seemed to respond quickly to every point we put on the board. We tied the game off a lucky corner kick that wasn’t taken too well by Hintz. Low and hard into the box, and fortunately a Toros defender tried to clear it hard, but only redirected it back into his own net. Not too long after we took the lead on a cross into the box from Huczek that was received by Hintz. A Toros defender got left with his pants down after Hintz turned on him and went 5-hole on the keeper for 3-2 Cucuy. Going with the story of the game, the lead didn’t last long. Toros scored only a minute or two later after their left midfielder was left unmarked, and received the ball walking in 1 on 1 on Kyle. He tucked it away far side.
A little later, a penetrating ball through the Toros defense came to Steve, who ensured no more shots went right at the Toros keeper, and instead just passed it easily to the side netting. 4-3 Cucuy. Once again, Toros tied the game briefly after us taking the lead. A ball that should have just been cleared early was stripped from our defense, leaving a Toros striker with an easy opportunity to score. With about 10 minutes left, Steve took matters into his own hands and on a scrappy play in the Toros 18, he wound up beating what seemed like every player on the Toros defensive line, and earned himself a clear shot at the far netting, which he successfully converted. 5-4 Cucuy, unbelievable. Sadly, the win just wasn’t meant to be ours on that day. A poorly cleared ball gave the ball back to the Toros left striker, who one more time tied the score at 5-5, which was where it remained until the final whistle.
