Cucuy FC - Traditionals 2:2 (0:0)
Although we played with a man down for the entire game, we dominated the first half and Patrick could have put us ahead on a break away but barely missed. Second half I think we slowed down a bit and Traditionals put on the pressure. They had several good chances but finally scored off a distance shot that gave Jesse no chance. Shortly after that, Traditionals had their best chance with a completely open shot from short distance that Jesse somehow was able to save. I don't think we would have come back from 2:0 at that point. Then we got a free-kick which I put away for the tie, a bit lucky at that point of the game. Only minutes later, Karl scored the 2:1. For the rest of the game we somewhat tried to keep the score, and Jesse had several great saves, but Traditionals finally scored another goal with another incredible distance shot.

Easy Win Against Club Latinos
Cucuy FC - Club Latinos 7:0 (4:0)
We didn't play our best but it was still more than enough against this new team. Hintz and Cary did a nice job passing the ball around, and our defense did not allow much to get on goal. Marty in goal had a very quiet first half. Up front Ben and Patrick had some nice passes and crosses. Hintz finally put it away for the first goal, followed by a goal from Cary.
Second half we started with a penalty after a foul on Marc. Brent's first kick was saved by the keeper, only to drop back to Brent who then buried it in the back of the net. After that, the midfield took it a bit easier which allowed one or two good chances for Latinos. In one case, Brent saved the ball on the goal line after Marty was beat. Goal of the day goes to Jason H., who in the last minute got the ball on the far left corner of the box, moved it to his right and then put it over the keeper in the upper right corner. Sonntagsschuss!
Goals: Eddy (2), Brent, Dave H., Marc, Jason H., Cary
MVP: Jason H. (coolest goal)

Cucuy Beats Queretaro and No Fight
Queretaro FC - Cucuy FC 0:1 (0:1)
So far we never finished a game against this team: both games ended in fights. What everybody expected to be another ugly fight turned out to be a pretty fair game. A couple of rough plays, a few high cleats but that was about it. What made the difference was an excellent team of refs who kept control for the whole game.
Patrick scored the goal of the day that came off the post after a low shot from Andrew, who was set up by a perfect pass from Karol. Andrew had another great chance but barely missed the 2:0.
Second half it was more or less a game on one goal (ours), with a few breakaways. Our defensive line though did an admirable job and defended attack after attack. With only half a sub the win was a bit lucky but still deserved thanks to a great defense.

Octabong - Cucuy FC 1:2 (0:0)
Carl put us ahead in second half after a free-kick from Karol that kind of dropped in his lap and from there rolled into the goal, barely making it over the goal line. Not the prettiest goal ever, but still put us ahead 1:0. Talking about pretty, Brent's goal that followed was one of the best I've ever seen. Corner from Karol, Brent came running on the short post and nailed the header under the crossbar. It happened so fast, the keeper wouldn't have had a chance even if he stood in that corner. Ibrahimovic would have been proud. In the end our lack of subs started to show, and Bong scored on a corner. But we held on to the win, thanks also to Jason who shut down Bong's main striker completely and had a really awesome game.

Revolution Beats Cucuy
Cucuy FC - C&C Revolution 2:3 (0:1)
Revolution came out pretty strong and put a lot of pressure on us with distance shots. After Jesse saved a bunch of them, one finally went it. We also had a few chances but I think the lead for Revolution at half time was deserved.
Second half we played much better, but had to concede two more goals. We came back after a nice setup from Andrew to Patrick, and with seconds to go another goal by Chris. Andrew could have had another shot at the tie but was fouled before getting into shooting range. Took two Revolution players to take him down, and I think they both hurt themselves by doing so. That'll teach em.

Andrew Scores Hattric Number Two
Jolly Rogers FU - Cucuy FC 0:4 (0:3)
Although we had no subs and even with Jesse in goal, we never were at a chance of losing this game. We were dominating from the first minute but it took a bunch of good chances until Andrew hit for the 1:0 after a great cross from Patrick. After a huge defensive mistake, I took up the chance for the 2:0, and Andrew scored again with the half time whistle from what appeared to be offsides.
In second half we started to shoot a bit more from a distance and came close to the 4:0 but could not quite put it away. With few minutes left, I set up Andrew after a great opening pass from Hintz across the midfield, and Andrew finally got the hattrick.

Cucuy Screwed by the Ref Big Time
Saturday United - Cucuy FC 2:1 (2:1)
With a firm language barrier in place we've been unlucky in the past dealing with refs that don't speak any English. This time we really got screwed. We had an open game until about 60 minutes into the game, when Karol fouled a player in mid-field that deserved a yellow. To everybody's surprise he did not get one but two yellows and was sent off, because the ref thought Karol had seen a yellow in the first half, which he had not. When Chris tried to explain that "ocho" is not "nueve" he was sent off with a straight red. These seriously crappy ref decisions can really take the fun out of it. Nevertheless, we managed to keep it at 2:1 for the rest of the game, which was pretty impressive.
Maybe it's time for a referee evaluation after each game.

Cucuy Rolls Over Manchester United
Manchester United - Cucuy FC 0:9 (0:7)
If Manchester United had a full squad it may have been an interesting game. They did not, and the game was decided after 15 minutes. Goal of the day could have gone to Dave Hintz who had a beautiful diving header that just missed the goal. Goal of the day does go to Jason, who received a pass on the left side, outside of the box, took aim, and ripped it into the right upper ninety. Bitteschoen!

Cucuy Beats Octabong
Cucuy FC - Octabong 2:1 (2:1)
Schluni put us ahead after we were pounding Octabong for about 15 minutes. Shortly after, Okan scored the 2:0 after Schluni and Patrick had forced an error in the defense that gave Okan an open shot from the top of the box. We had plenty of chances for the 3:0 but the keeper was pretty good and cleaned up everything that came his way. With 1 minute left, the ref gave the Octabong a penalty that was seemingly accepted by all except Okan: "I didn't push him. Much." Carl had nothing to do until this point and couldn't save that one either. Which reminds me, it's never a good idea to blow up a whale http://www.theexplodingwhale.com/evidence/the-video/
Second half we started with a few good chances but then Octabong pushed back and started to create chances. Halfway through second half they had an open shot that crashed against our cross bar, then a distance shot that Carl was able to save, and another completely open shot from two yards out that Carl was also able to deflect. Andrew and Dan both had great chances to put the game away but in the end the 2:1 was enough.

Game Against Querétaro Ends in Fight
Cucuy FC - Querétaro FC 4:1 (1:0)
Looks like the old "Real Madrid" is back, and they did not bother getting new jerseys either. Overall, it was not an unfair game, but a handful of guys on the Queretaro squad were clearly in the mood for a fight. Let's hope they get banned for good after this match.
We were clearly controlling the first half, but could not finish any of about 10 good chances until Brent put away an awesome free kick from Karol with his signature header. Shortly before that, a Querétaro player had seen a red for calling the ref names in Spanish. Second half, we were even more dominant, but Querétaro was able to equalize on a penalty, a really bad call on the refs part. Then we shot three more goals, including a pretty cool one from Patrick all the way on the left who saw the keeper out of his goal and surprised him with a long shot. Things escalated when Chris did a sneaky play on the keeper, who then turned around and kicked Chris against the shin. If that's not a red card then what is? Shortly after, Andrew pushed the sweeper slightly, which started another round of push and shove. After that the ref called the game.
I think a more experienced referee could have kept things perfectly in order, but this one did not really know what she was doing.

Most Awesome Tie Ever
Mercenaries FC - Cucuy FC 4:4 (1:1)
We started with no subs against a team that had showed up with a second squad, so we new there would be a lot of running ahead. Lucky was out so we asked Cory to help out, who gladly obliged. Cory could do anything about the first goal but had a super-save on a one-on-one that saved the tie at half time.
In second half, Cary got injured on his knee and had to sub out. With a man down, Karol had a great second goal to bring us up 2:1, but Mercenaries tied it up soon after. Then Karol was fouled in the box, admittedly 10 yards away from the ball, but we got a penalty anyway and went ahead 3:2. Mercenaries tied it again, and then took the lead with for 4:3, which felt to me kind of like the end of the game.
So with a man down, 5 minutes to go, Karol had one last run, chasing down a long ball and finding himself surrounded by 4 defenders, with no support from anyone else. By this time we were just too tired to make another run in the heat. What then followed was luckily captured by Cary using his cell-phone camera:
Not sure how Karol pulled it off and why he looks so dark in this movie, but it was the most awesome goal I've seen in a long, long time.
Hope that Cary's injury is not as bad as it looked.

Cucuy FC - Corporation FC 3:1 (0:0)
A pretty even game that could have gone either way, but we got a bit lucky. Corporation had two or three really good players who gave us some trouble on defense. But Cary was eiskalt today, putting both setups away. In between Patrick scored a goal before asking if he was offside or not. The linesman wasn't paying attention, so the goal counted.

Win against Fading Stars and New Season Goal Scoring Record
Cucuy FC - Fading Stars 5:2 (3:1)
I think I can get used to the fields at STAR Soccer Complex. And the new Fading Stars - a lot less dirty play, almost no complaining. They started out very defensively, which opened up lots of opportunities for us. At half we were 3:1 ahead, giving up the FS goal with the half time whistle. Second half Cole immediately made clear that there would be no chance to turn the game around with the 4:1. Although Jesse in goal tried to make the game a bit more interesting by Ninja-diving and missing ball and player for the 4:2. In the end, Ben claimed his hattrick for the 5:2 final. Which brings the season tally to 41 goals, which is a new record I think.

Cucuy gets Spanked by Mercenaries
Cucuy FC - Mercenaries FC 2:6 (1:5)
Games against Mercenaries have always been close calls in the past, but this one clearly was not. With only 10 men, missing Karol, Scotty, Brent, Carl, and CNate, this was a bit too much. I felt bad for Jesse who was trying his best but really had no chance to save four of the first five. On the other hand, 1:5 sounds a lot worse than we played first half. With a bit of luck we should have scored about three times. Highlight of the first half was Ben's goal, a low shot he passed by the keeper (Birke: "There goes the skunk!").
Second half Jason gave Jesse a break and played keeper which worked out pretty well for us. Mercenaries got a little greedy, starting to shoot from any distance, which made a bit easier for Jason. Cole then scored our second goal after intercepting a pass from a defender and shooting it past the keeper who was on its way back to his goal.
But man, do I love the Star Soccer Complex fields!

Seguin Gets Win In Close Game
Cucuy FC - Seguin 2:3 (1:2)
After we finished beating up Jesse for giving out the the teams of the World Cup final, we started the game against a pretty well organized Seguin team. We were off to a good start when Hintz produced a beautiful pass through the Seguin defense that caught their defense by surprise and I was able to slip by the keeper for the 1:0 lead. Seguin however wasn't much impressed, and developed several good chances. They finally got lucky on a long shot that hit the crossbar and dropped in behind Carl, and then somehow scored the second goal off our kick-off.
Second half we started out strong with several good chances, many of them set up by Scotty and Hintz in the middle. One of them Scotty was able to finish to tie the game. After that the game opened up with several chances on both sides, but Seguin was able to finish one more, and we did not. Seguin was later denied a penalty after Jesse prevented a shot on our goal by slide tackling the striker in our box ("I got nothing but leg"). Strange how the ref missed that one. In the end the game could have gone either way but Seguin had the upper hand today.

Cucuy FC Routs a 10-Men Chelsea
Cucuy FC - Chelsea 5:1 (0:1)
Most of the Chelsea’s squad must had been called up to international duties for the game Germany vs. England, as they showed up a man short. I feel like an old record now, but taking care of goal scoring opportunities will be our priority for the pre-season camp. We WILL start converting our chances! Anyway, Cucuy FC enjoyed a majority of the ball possession throughout the match, but failed to score (at least in the first half). On the other hand, Chelsea took one counter attack, and Drogba finds a loose ball among our four defenders and scores, 0:1. Half time showed some excitement as well. Apparently, Carvalho gets red-carded during the break for verbally attack on the referee. Not good… Second half, Chelsea started to wear down in their back lines leaving Cary open. He showed us some good old Cary’s speed and finish 2 for 2, 2:1. Three more goals were added by Karol before the end.

Cucuy FC No Match for Locos’ Efficiency
Cucuy FC - Los Cholos Locos 0:3 (0:2)
Failing to convert on several occasions proved to be fatal for Cucuy FC. After watching this game, one could easily say that having abundance of chances does not automatically guarantee a victory as Cucuy FC played level matched against the young side. To Los Cholos Locos credit, taking five shots and all being a goal scoring cracks means either you are very lucky or pretty darn good. In this case it was a scoring ability of our opponent that made a tipping difference in the outcome. I must say that Carl, having a first game between pipes since the injury, prevented even worse. When several times he made great dives to stop the ball getting into back of our net. He definitely earned the MVP.

Cucuy Beats All Footballers
Cucuy FC - All Footballers Conf. 4:2
Being resilient pays off, especially when you play against 10-men team. All Footballers started short a player and they selected their tactics accordingly. They packed their defensive half and kept a lonely striker to raise a havoc in our defensive lines. From the start Cucuy FC controlled the play for the most part, but failed to capitalized on several early opportunities that resulted from series of nice passes and outside runs. Our lack of finishing got punished by one of the seldom ventures of Footballers striker into our half with a shot from 35 yards out. Cory got caught well out of position, 1:0. Few minutes later Schluni managed to bring us onto level terms almost single handedly, when his cross/shot sailed over the keeper into a far corner, 1:1. All Footballers seized the moment and scored on us after a strong run through the middle and flick into our box, Cory spilling the rebound; 1:2. It seemed like our passing game was not going to break down the defensive wall, so something different had to be tried. A long cross from the back into Jonathan’s stride, a quick flick to Ben, shot saved by a keeper, and a cat-like reaction by Andrew heading the ball into back of the net; 2:2. During this time All Footballers were in full strength. A penalty should have been awarded to Cucuy FC, as a result of intentional handball inside the penalty area by All Footballers. The referee managed to pull the kick outside the PK box; at least he booked the offender. Cory made up for his early lack of concentration with an excellent save when he erased a one-on-one opportunity. Way to keep us in the game! The second half Cucuy FC came out with more piss and vinegar. Ben made a timely run up the middle beating the offside trap. As a last resort, the defender tackled Ben from behind missing the ball. That should’ve been a direct red card, since he was the last man back. Anyway, the referee gave the guy a second yellow and showed him off the pitch. All Footballers were back to 10 men. Cucuy FC used the available room to their advantage and managed to place several shots on the frame. One of them, a low shot, deflected by the keeper, straight into Andrew’s path, which he clinically tapped in for his second goal of the game; 3:2. Good job picking up the garbage… The game was far from decided, as All Footballers made several good charging runs through our lines. On one of those counters Brent had to turn on his afterburners and chase down their forward to deliver a terrific tackle as the guy was taking a shot. To commemorate this defensive play of the game we should all shave our heads for the next match. Scotty eventually decided that a goal difference was too close for comfort. He took matters onto his own feet, dribbled down the middle, took a shot beating the keeper Dempsey style; 4:2. I don’t remember their keeper having a British accent. With series of great defensive plays, never giving up and adding a goal as a cherry on top earned Scotty the MVP of the match. Hats off to All Footballers to keeping us honest throughout the game even playing with man short for the most part.

Being resilient pays off, especially when you play against 10-men team. All Footballers started short a player and they selected their tactics accordingly. Cucuy Blasts Rangers
Cucuy FC - Rangers FC 8:1
Shame on Karol for forgetting the primary jerseys and making Nick wearing a skin tight tank-top that did not leave too much to imagination. Cucuy FC started out quite offensively pinning the Rangers in their own third of the field, which resulted in first goal by Ben. The newcomer Jon, had a great inaugural game by working himself well into the offensive line rotation. Rangers showed some good ball control through the middle and up front, but any signs of attack were naturalized by our solid defensive line. Well, until the one breakaway, which Stan had under control up to the point when he tripped up and lost the foot race with the attacker; 1:1. From that point on, there was very little sign of Rangers and all Cucuy FC. Ben scored 4 goals by the half time mark and Andrew had one as well. The second half did not bring much of the change other than a strict red card issued to a Rangers player for running his mouth. Cucuy FC continued their offensive display and managed to add three more goals. One of them a laser beam cracker by Karol that squeezed into a right upper ninety corner. The game was eventually shortened by 10 minutes, as per Rangers request.

Hintz Scores Off Freekick, Jason Makes Kahn Proud
Cucuy FC - Azteca FC 2:7 (1:4)
It's already Thursday but I'm still a bit sore from the game, and I mean physically. I guess I haven't played 90 minutes with three men down in a while. Considering that, I don't think we did such a bad job. We decided on an Inter Milan tactic using a 4/2/1 with 2 defensive midfielders (Scotty and Dave) and Andrew as the lone striker up front. About 10 minutes into the game, Scotty dribbled the ball into the box and could only be stopped by a foul - penalty! Andrew took up the responsibility, missed the shot, and got a second chance he also missed. BUT that was all part of the plan, since the resulting corner by Dave gave us the lead with a Brent-style header goal.
Wow. So we're three man down and still go ahead 1:0, that was pretty impressive. Jason had a number of Kahn-worthy saves but in the end he could not keep them all out so we were down 4:1 at half time. Second half Dave scored off a freekick from a center-left position. It was not the most beautiful shot, but it did go in and I think it was his first free kick taken, and first free kick goal, so not bad. After that Azteca should have scored a bunch more goals but Jason saved us time and time again. With a full squad I don't think Azteca would have beaten us. Hope our injured players are back soon.

Andrew with Hattrick Plus
Cucuy FC - Caracole FC 6:0 (2:0)
Given that we scored 11 goals (plus one own goal) last season, I guess this is not too bad of a start. Talking about bad start, that's what I had after I subbed in for Hintz who had just served up Andrew for the 1:0. After a beautiful corner from Karol I found myself on the three yard line (as pointed out after the fact by one of the defenders) with the ball bouncing off my head and over the goal. To my defense there was no warning from Karol, and as Brent's designated decoy I was not really expecting to get in on the action. Let's just say I'm not going to complain about anybody missing any chances for the rest of the season. Or at least next game.
Second half Caracole picked up the pace a bit and had a few good chances but could not get it passed Shawn, who had an excellent game. I looks like they opened up a bit because in a short time we scored two more goals after which they pretty much gave up. Caracole had the last chance of the game, a completely open shot from the 3 yard line, that went over somehow. Taken by the same guy who pointed that out to me first half. I guess that makes us even...
Man I love playing on these fields. Let's hope we keep playing here.

Lucky Win for All Footballers
All Footballers - Cucuy FC 2:1 (1:1)
For the last game of the season I think we deserved a tie, but we didn't have the luck on our side today. First half we played against a strong wind but put a lot of pressure on All Footballers with a very good passing game. Andrew scored the goal of the game after a nice passing play through midfield. A little later Andrew deflected a cross by All Footballers in our box with his arm, and to the surprise of all the ref called a penalty. There was definitely no intent to play the ball with his hand/arm, a terrible call in my view. That shot tied the game. After that there were are bunch of chances on both sides, and two or three great saves by Shawn.
Second half All Footballers turned the table and put a lot of pressure on our defense. For the first 15 minutes they had several chances in a row, and put one of them away for the winning goal. We came back strong and had a few good chances, including a shot that was saved by the cross bar, and another shot that somebody scraped off the goal line. In the last few minutes CNate kept us in the game, chasing down an All Footballer and clearing the ball to a corner.

Cucuy Back in the Game
Cucuy FC - Traditionals 2:0 (1:0)
Back from our Intermezzo at Star Soccer Complex, we didn't expect to see so much green at Schertz, but were pleasantly surprised. Thank you rain! Got to enjoy the green while you can, summer, dirt and dust are just around the corner. The Traditionals are an o.k. team, but overall we should have won much higher than this. Although it was a somewhat even game first half, we definitely had the better chances. After a bunch of good misses, Cary finally put it away with a low shot in the right corner, after Schluni opened the game with a nice pass to the outside and I passed it on to Cary. Schluni could have scored the second goal after a nice setup from CNate but was called offsides.
Second half was more or less a game on the Traditionals goal. I think Shawn got about two chances to pick up the ball with his hands in second half. Although we're always good with missing great opportunities, I think this game beats them all. Karol, Andrew, Hintz, all had pretty much open shots or headers, but somehow managed to give the keeper a chance to get a hand or foot in. Schluni made an end to this put away his second shot on goal for the 2:0. The goal was a really great play with a set of quick passes through the middle starting with Jason to Karol, to Hintz, and on to Dave. So for next game, don't forget to drink your Zielwasser!

Mercenary Runs Down the Fort
Mercenary - Cucuy FC 4:1 (1:0)
We played these guys several times before and it's always been a tough game, so without Karol, Jesse, and Dan we knew this one would get tough. It also didn't help that we started a man short, so a 1:0 at half time was not the worst that could happen. With a full squad in second half, we started out hoping to turn this around, only to see Mercenary's center striker to get a lucky break through our middle defense for the 2:0. The good thing about the game was that nobody gave up after that and everybody kept pushing back, the bad thing was that Mercenaries simply were better than us today. Shortly before the end though we got our well deserved Ehrentreffer, a beautiful header from Brent after a monster throw in from CNate.

Match Against Real Madrid Ends in Fight
Cucuy FC - Real Madrid 1:0 (1:0)
Looking back I'm not sure how it all escalated this far, but it didn't help that Real had a bunch of dirty players on their squad. The ref also did his part, and then some of our players lost their cool. What I do saw though that Karol got a high kick in his face in first half that got unnoticed and Dave Hintz almost lost a nut on a real dirty slide tackle. In second half, Karol was wrestled down on a run into the box. I guess that happens occasionally, but most players let go of him once he hits the ground. This guy however kind of hung on to Karol while he got back up. Karol didn't retaliate though and kept asking the ref if he would do something about it. Well eventually he did, gave the guy a red, but then gave one to Karol as well, for "talking". That was probably the worst call since Doug Hanson got send off (the "double-bird incident"), and that's when everything started. I think it would have been better if Karol had kept his cool then, but there's only so much Bullenscheisse a man can take. I won't get into who did what after that, only to say that in my opinion no matter how bad the ref he should always be off limits. It would help though if we get a ref that speaks just a little English, or at least German. After that incident the game was over. A couple of days later we found out that Real was just back from suspension for fighting, and now has been banned from the league for good. Tschuess!

Cucuy Win Over Bulverde
Bulverde - Cucuy FC 1:2 (0:1)
We played Bulverde on the same, somewhat worn dirt field with intermittent green patches we played on last week. Ben and Andrew had a couple of good chances but could not get past Bulverde's keeper. CNate had a nice shot but barely missed. Kind of ironic that it was an own goal that put us ahead at half-time. Second half Bulverde picked up the pace and chances were more even on both sides. Bulverde scored on a counter-attack and run through midfield. In the end, Todd put us ahead pushing the ball over the line after a shot from Karol that the keeper could not hold on to. We should have definitely won higher but I guess a win is a win. I really hope we're going to play on a better field next Sunday.

Cucuy Back on Track
Cucuy FC - Storm 2 3:0 (1:0)
Ahh, it's good to be back. After a lengthy injury break it felt great to be playing again. Even better that we won this one. Even though we had to play with under inflated soccer balls, per instruction by the ref, following his "bouncing test": "Bounce too much!" I think this was also the first time that none of the refs spoke any English, including the word "sub." Well I always said we should all speak German. In any case, looks like Andrew made some real progress with the offsides rule, and he had plenty of chances to score. After missing a few shots he stopped shooting at the actually good keeper and instead decided to move around him and shoot in the empty goal, and do that twice. Goal of the day however goes to Karol who jammed a free-kick in the upper ninety. Hau ihn rein!

Spring Season Off to Good Start
Cucuy FC - Centro America 1:0 (1:0)
It didn't feel like spring just yet but it was a pretty good game anyway. Andrew scored the goal of the day after a trademark throw-in from CNate. We should have scored at least 2 more than that, but we also got lucky right before halftime when Centro America had a wide open shot that hit our post. Second half Karol had a laser beam shot that hit the crossbar and bounced behind the line but was disallowed by the ref, verdammte Scheisse. Towards the end, I think we ran a bit out of steam and Centro pushed us back. (If we only had subs!) Thanks to keeper Sean and our defense we held them at 1:0. Btw Sean, you know about that 6-second keeper rule right? MVP goes to Birke who had a great game and seems to be fully recovered. And Cary, welcome back!
